TASMANIA

Hobart, TASMANIA

Picturesque Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, Australia’s smallest state, separated from the mainland to the south by Bass Straight. With a population of only 200,000 and a European climate, Hobart has been described as more like a large English village than an Australian city. With Antarctica lying to the south, winds can be chilly; so much so that, even in summer, Mt Wellington (just outside Hobart) is often capped with snow.

Despite its size and isolation, Hobart enjoys a bustling tourist industry, with convict ruins at Port Arthur and the surrounding countryside the biggest drawcards. The Cadbury chocolate factory is also a favourite destination. Hobart is also the major port for those travelling to Antarctica. The annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race on Boxing Day brings ocean racers from around the world. Other industries include fisheries, farming, forestry and mining. The public transport network encompasses public and private buses, but most here travel by car. The roads are well maintained and the smaller population means traffic is generally under control.

Tasmania is renowned for its excellent seafood, which can be bought fresh in many of the city’s restaurants. But beware that, just like in English villages, shops and restaurants close earlier than in most other cities. Real estate is cheaper here than in any other state capital, but with many Australians looking for a ‘sea change’ and moving to more peaceful areas, prices are rising.
